Irrelevant search results

Submitted by kimarie on Wed, 2012-01-11 09:41 in

The search results that my site seems to be producing are quite irrelevant, when searching for things like "skirt" a lot of the results are dresses a search for "leopard print skirt" shows shoes, dresses, tops that don't even seem remotely close to the search term

Any way I could change this?
Thanks

Hi kimarie,

It looks like your niche would actually benefit from logic AND (all keywords must be present) rather than relying on full text relevancy. The basic search method is logic AND by default - so to try this, from wp-admin > Settings > PriceTapestry.org scroll down to External and change the drop-down alongside $config_useFullText to FALSE and then save the settings. Finally; check some example search results again and relevancy should have been improved...

Cheers,
David.

Hi
The useFullText is already set to be False

Hi Kirstin,

Are you using $config_searchDescription on this installation as that would impact on relevancy as implied by product names only?

Cheers,
David.

Hi
Yes I thought that was best set as true as some products only have important factors such as colour etc. in their descriptions rather than the product title. Should I change this?

Hi Kirstin,

Yes - it would be worth experimenting with $config_searchDescription set to False to see what yields the best results for your niche...

If that works but it would still be desirable to include the description let me know and I'll experiment with some code to apply additional relevancy to words within the title whilst still including description in the search...

Cheers,
David.

Hi
Yes setting it to False does give a much better set of results but searching the description in the long run would still be desirable, this product for instance:

Wouldn't come up in a search for a "blue blouse" and as a lot of other retailers give their clothes random names rather than descriptive ones its going to be a common theme throughout.
Thanks

Hi Kirstin,

I'll give basic search method + description relevance priority to product name a go, I'll drop you an email when I've worked out a viable modification to save you having to keep checking back and then post the code here...

Cheers,
David.
